Clear Seal or Colour Seal? How to Choose for Your Concrete Driveway
Both protect your driveway — but one keeps the look you've got and one transforms it. Here's how to know which your concrete actually needs.

Once you've decided to seal your driveway, there's one more choice: clear or colour. They protect the concrete the same way, but the result is completely different — so this one comes down to what your driveway looks like now and what you want it to look like after.
Clear seal — protect what you've got
A clear seal is invisible colour-wise. It soaks in, protects against water, salt, oil and UV, and lifts the existing look without changing the colour. It's the right choice when your concrete or aggregate is in good condition and you already like the colour. You pick the sheen:
- Wet-look — a rich, glossy finish that deepens colour and makes exposed aggregate and pavers pop.
- Satin / enhance — a subtle sheen, the middle ground.
- Natural — invisible protection that keeps the surface looking exactly as it is.
Colour seal — transform a tired surface
A colour seal is a tinted seal that recolours the concrete as it protects it. It's the right choice when your driveway is faded, patchy, stained or you just want a fresh new colour — think a tired stencil driveway brought back to a rich charcoal. It's the bigger transformation, and it's our most popular job for exactly that reason. (Just don't confuse it with painting — very different thing.)

Is a clear seal cheaper than a colour seal?+
Usually yes — a colour seal uses more product, pigment and prep and is often two coats, so it costs a bit more. But it's the bigger change, so it's about which result you want, not just price.
Can I put a clear seal over a colour seal?+
Yes — a clear coat can go over a colour seal to add extra protection or sheen. We'll advise if it's worth it for your driveway.
Which lasts longer?+
Roughly the same — longevity depends more on the product, sun and traffic than on whether it's clear or coloured. Both need resealing every few years.
